Typography

Being a good designer is one thing, but being aware of the importance of the placement of the text on your design is another story.  Typography is the placement of type on any given medium… the placement of the words, on the page can be a piece of art in and of itself.  Here are 10 examples of typography and the many styles it has to offer.

Business cards

Business cards are very important!!  They are something with your brand and logo on it that possible clients can take with them, and possibly show the business card to other possible clients.  This is why Brand Identity, and the consistency of this brand is so important.  Here are 10 examples I found on the internet…  Which is your favorite?

Art Deco… SUPER HEROES?

Found a great line up of pictures today by Greg Gilleman, a french designer, and they are AWESOME to say the least.  Art Deco is by definition a predominant decorative art style of the 1920s and 1930s, characterized by precise and boldly delineated geometric shapes and strong colors.  Check these out!!

Art v.s. Design

This concept is debated everywhere these days.  Most designers see themselves as artists, and most artists don’t see themselves as designers… therefore causing the debate of the difference between the two.

Difference 1 – Purpose

The first difference I would say is that typically art starts with a blank canvas, and generally is built from the ground up.  They usually build this from an idea, view, or oppinion within themselves to create a piece of art to inspire, or get different reactions from others.

Now as far as design goes, it almost always starts out with an image, a concept, or an idea given by a company or organization to convey one solid message to the masses. That message is usually purchase this, or come here, or learn this.

Difference 2 - Interpretation

Artist usually use their own personal thoughts or ideas to make a piece, but the way the audience interprets this art is purely subjective and can change from person to person.  The thing about art is every way it is interpreted, or every emotion felt from the piece is not wrong because that is what art is all about.

Now on the opposite end of the spectrum design is more consistent in the message. When a designer does a piece for a company they want the idea in everyone who sees it to be the same, and they want to convey that message as fast, and efficiently as possible. No one is going to look at an ad advertisement and ponder the emotions they feel, but will usually show interest in the product or service, or turn the page.

Difference 3 – Talent v.s. Skill

This one is tricky cause both art and design can have both of these, but the true difference here is artistic talent is usually found at a young age and honed over the course of the individuals life.  More often then not good artists can not be trained due to the years it takes to achieve the ability to be a good artist.

Now as far as design you don’t necessarily have to have any gestural art ability to be a good designer and convey the messages you need to convey.  almost everything in design can be taught the programs, spacing, balance, visual hierarchy, typography, etc.  These are all skills that take no real articulation or “talent” to do compared to gestural art, but it definitely takes plenty of understanding and skill to succeed at.

Conclusion

The moral here is, though art and design have very different concepts and very different skills/talents to do.  They are both really awesome and I hope artists and designers both realize what they do is important to the world, and I hope the line can continue to blur cause in my opinion CREATIVITY is the common factor that trumps all differences between the two.

Below are two pieces I did myself, one I feel represents art and the other represents design.  Thank you and enjoy!!

Simplicity with Impact

“Design can be art. Design can be aesthetics. Design is so simple, that’s why it is so complicated.” – Paul Rand

Today I would like to do a little piece on Paul Rand.  Paul Rand could easily be talked about as the individual who turned “commercial artists” into “graphic designers”.  If not for Paul Rand businesses would not understand the importance of the art work surrounding their company.  The art work, brand, image, or any of the many names gives consumers something easy to recognize and associate with your business.  For example take companies like Adidas, Nike, Apple, Microsoft, etc. (not all designed by Rand) they all have at one time had a logo that was either complex, or had their name included in the logo.  Over time though these companies have taken their image to a height where their logos are just simple pictures… pictures with no words.  These pictures are instantly recognizable to the masses.

Paul Rand is another artist who believes that simple design is 9 out of 10 times better than complex.  Complex usually requires thought to sort things out… the consumer has to ask themselves what is going on, and what is the relevance to the company, and by the time they figure it out they don’t care.  Typically you only have about 12 seconds to grab someones attention… so definitely SIMPLE is the way to go, but don’t get it confused just because a design is “simple” does not mean it cannot be dynamic.

Paul Rand is an amazing designer, and is another strong inspiration in my life.

Below are some examples of Paul Rands work ENJOY!!

Shepard Fairey

Today I will be blogging about one of my biggest inspirations Shepard Fairey.  He is not my inspiration only due to his incredible nack for art and design, but also like myself he has Type 1 Diabetes.  He is a street artist who through one little piece of art reached millions of people.  He is a true testament to the power of art.

He threw together a stencil of Andre the Giant when he was younger, and decided to print stickers out of the design.  He then just stuck them everywhere, his concept of repetition and consistency flows into the design world flawlessly.  it started to raise questions in the masses of who or what was doing this.  When people started to figure it out he became a cult icon, and went on to do art shows selling pieces of art for thousands of dollars.  He now continues to do art shows across the globe, and owns his own clothing company.  He is most well known for his actions of doing art to promote Obama and illegally posting it everywhere, then Obama asked him to stop, but then invited him to join his marketing team cuing the Obama Hope poster.  He strongly supports PEACE in his art work, and I personally love everything about his stuff.  He has a simplistic style, but has a complex background styling in some of his pieces.  Anybody who loves art and interesting people should check him out!!

Here is some of his art.  Enjoy, and remember never give up anyone can make it with determination and effort!!
